About the scheme
The Great British Insulation Scheme is a new government initiative aimed at improving energy efficiency in homes across Great Britain. Formerly known as ECO+, this scheme is overseen by Ofgem and seeks to enhance the energy performance of the most inefficient homes in order to alleviate fuel poverty and help lower energy bills.
Determine whether you are eligible for support under the Great British Insulation Scheme.
This scheme serves as a complement to the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme. However, unlike ECO4’s comprehensive 'whole house' strategy, the Great British Insulation Scheme primarily focuses on implementing individual insulation measures.
In addition to assisting low-income and vulnerable households, the scheme is open to those residing in properties with an Energy Performance Certificate rating of D to G and within Council Tax bands A to D in England, and A to E in Scotland and Wales.
The scheme imposes a requirement on medium and large energy suppliers to deliver measures that contribute to reduced energy consumption. The initiative commenced in April 2023 and is set to conclude in April 2026.

FREE Loft Insulation Grants
Heat from your house will rise resulting in 25% of the heat generated being lost through the roof of an uninsulated home.
Insulating the roof space of your home is the simplest, most cost-effective way of saving energy and reducing your heating bills.
Insulation should be applied to the loft area to a depth of at least 270mm, both between the joists and above as the joists themselves create a “heat bridge” and transfer heat to the air above.

FREE Cavity Wall Insulation Grants
About 35% of all heat loss from UK homes takes place through external walls. Most homes built after 1920 have twin exterior walls with a narrow cavity between them.
This can be filled with an insulating material being injected into the walls. This restricts any warmth passing between them, reducing the money you spend on heating.
If you’re unsure whether your walls have a cavity in them you can usually check by either looking at the pattern of bricks or by measuring the thickness of the walls next to a door or window:
- If the thickness of the wall is 260mm or greater, the wall probably has a cavity.
- If the brickwork is exposed, look at the brick pattern. If the bricks are all oblong, laid end-to-end then the wall is likely to have a cavity. If some of the bricks are laid with the square end facing, the wall is likely to be solid.
- If the wall is stone, it is likely to be solid.
You will qualify for Free Insulation if:
Your home is in Council Tax band A - D
Your home must be in council tax bands A - D to qualify, there are no exceptions.
Your homes EPC is rated D - G
The EPC for the property must be rated D - G otherwise it will not be considered.
Your home requires either cavity wall or loft insulation
The scheme will allow you to either have cavity wall insulation or loft insulation for free. It will only cover one or the other.
